In many ways, San Marcos tells the story of Texas. Its rich and distinct history finds its source at the San Marcos River, a hub for life over the centuries. Studies have proven San Marcos one of the oldest continuously inhabited sites in North America. Evidence of Native Americans living along the riverbanks dates as far back as 12,000 years ago.

Spanish explorers discovered the springs that form the river on Saint Mark's Day in 1689 and named the river for the saint. Nearly 120 years later, the Spanish established a brief settlement named Villa San Marcos de Neve near present day San Marcos. In 1844, General Edward Burleson the Former Vice President of the Republic of Texas, chose San Marcos for a settlement. By 1848, the town had become the County Seat. The town was laid out in 1851 and incorporated in 1877.
